Today I got all the doors and drawer front cores for the island prepped. Here's a few pictures of the cores. This gives you a better idea of what it takes to make a door this way.
After getting the last set out of the clamps I cut the veneers. This is a process of careful measuring and marking. The goal is make all the faces out of one continuous sheet of veneer so the grain all lines up once they're installed. So, if I mess up any one of the 9 drawers, all would have to be remade from the beginning!
After carefully measuring and cutting all 18 front and back veneers for the drawers, I was able to get 12 glued (6 drawers total, front and back) and in the bag before I ran short of open time for the glue. So In they went and there they will stay until around 8 p.m. tonight.
The smudge of brown resting on top of the vacuum bag is some of the glue smeared between sheets of wax paper. With it sitting on the bag it acts as a gauge for how hard the glue inside is. As the smudge cures, I know for sure if the pieces are ready to be removed. Nice trick, huh?
Here are some pics of the island side panels which I glued up a few days ago.
Once all the parts of veneered, they'll be ready for assembly!
