Next Project

My next commission is from a design firm here in Indianapolis. They specialize in high end cabinetry. For this job, I'll be part of a team updating an existing kitchen. The plan call for replacing the counter tops, adding a raised bar wall behind the existing peninsula, moving the microwave, adding a range hood and updating the appliances. There will also be some decorative elements added to spruce things up.

The most difficult part of all this will be constructing the new range hood. The design calls for a 3-sided curved vent chase out of cherry. I've build similar designs before, but always to be covered in plaster for a Tuscan or southwestern look, of sheathed in metal (copper or stainless). In those cases the wood work was only a support structure and didn't need to look perfect.

In this case the finish will be stained cherry, so the joint along the curved corners must be perfect, and the curves themselves perfect. This changes the entire process. Once again my vacuum bag will come to the rescue. I will detail the process of building the hood as I go, until then, here's the basic design (molding details will be added to the finished product).

This should be fun!
